‘Making Sense’ is the first iteration of the ‘residency for ideas’ - a project facilitated by New Practice, KCA Architects and the Mackintosh School of Architecture. As the first selected group of architectural graduates, we have been investigating our relationships with space (making) and who it is attributed to - with Glasgow’s Barras market and the market typology more generally as our case study.
 
Over the summer, we worked on redefining the architect's role, believing everyone should shape spaces. Barriers like gender, race, and class often limit participation in architectural decisions. Our upcoming exhibition from the 4th to 6th October in Glasgow, will focus on bridging traditional craftsmanship with local cultures through sensory engagement. We challenge conventional architectural methods, advocating for inclusivity and community involvement.

At first glance, the Tenement House appears to be an ordinary middle-class tenement from the late 19th century, standing in Garnethill. However, when you step inside, the faithfully restored four rooms appear as if frozen in time and provide a rare glimpse into life in Glasgow in the early 20th century.

The Maxwell family lived for six centuries on the site, but the main part of the present house was built in the mid-18th century – an example of Georgian grandeur that would be at home in a Jane Austen novel.

Mackintosh at the Willow re-opened to the public on 7th September 2018 after an extensive restoration. The original Willow Tea Rooms Building was initially opened by Miss Cranston and designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1903. You can now dine in the historic tearooms, visit the new interactive visitor centre and browse our retail store.

Situated on Glasgow’s historic Trongate, this music hall began life in 1857 at a time when Glasgow's population was booming, and its streets were overcrowded with working folk desperate to be entertained. Music Halls were a popular form of entertainment with the working classes during the Victorian and Edwardian era. At first, they were back rooms behind pubs, though this one is different, being on the floor above! It would have held over 1500 visitors, eager to be amused and let off steam while watching the acts that ranged from singers, dancers and comedians to acrobats, animal, and novelty acts. In 1906, an eccentric showman, A.E Pickard, added a carnival, freak show, wax works and zoo to the entertainments where visitors could catch a glimpse of the Himalayan Bear in the basement or the Tattooed Lady in the attic.

Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson designed the house for paper magnate James Couper and his wife in 1857–8, and it’s widely regarded as this Scottish architect’s finest domestic creation.
